Shoplifter Lee Barnes jailed at Southampton Magistrates’ Court for targeting Tesco Express, One Stop and Superdrug in Hythe





A PERSISTENT shoplifter who stole hundreds of pounds of groceries and cosmetics in a string of thefts from Hythe stores has been jailed.

Lee Barnes (41), of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty at Southampton Magistrates’ Court to committing 11 offences between July and November last year.

Eight of the thefts saw him target Tesco Express on Langdown Lawn, stealing more than £200 of meat, coffee, chocolate, cheese, biscuits, laundry detergent and advent calendars.

Barnes committed two of the offences at One Stop on Fairview Parade, taking more than £50 of meat and chocolate.

The remaining theft took place at Superdrug on High Street, with the defendant having left the store without paying for £179 worth of make-up.

As well as the 11-week prison sentence, Barnes was ordered to pay £396.40 in compensation.

Following the sentencing, Hampshire police urged shop owners or staff members to come forward if they are hit by shoplifters.

A force spokesperson said: “With your information, we can take action, including arresting and charging suspects and convicting offenders at court, as the above again demonstrates.”
