What’s On: Acosta Danza Yunior presents Green Shoots, MAST Mayflower Studios and Lighthouse Poole

A CELEBRATION of Cuban dance and folklore will make its international debut at Mast Mayflower Studios in Southampton before appearing at Lighthouse Poole.

Founded last year by world-famous Cuban ballet dancer Carlos Acosta to develop the next generation of talented dancers, Acosta Danza Yunior makes its international debut at MAST Mayflower Studios later this month before moving on to Lighthouse Poole.

The junior company embodies Carlos’s mission to celebrate Cuban folk through its repertoire attracting renowned Cuban choreographers to explore both existing and new creations with these dynamic, energetic and talented young dancers.

The programme, entitled Green Shoots, will showcase a rich mixed bill in celebration of Cuba’s folkloric history and features the international premiere of Fuga, a piece created especially for this new company by Spanish dancer/choreographer Susana Pous.

Also billed are the duet Nosotros by Beatriz García and Raúl Reinoso. while the creative duo of Thais Suarez and Norge Cedeño have revised their choreography for Híbrido.

Acosta Danza Yunior’s three-year programme for dancers aged 18-21 is for recently graduated professional dancers from the Acosta Danza Academy and acts as a bridge between the Academy and Acosta Danza.

Its artistic goals align with the contemporary style, with a marked influence from Cuban modern dance and the folk and popular dances of the Caribbean nation, considering the technical development of classical ballet.

Acosta Danza Yunior Green Shoots will be at MAST Mayflower Studios from 19th to 21st September and then at Lighthouse Poole on 26th and 27th September. Tickets are priced from £14.50 to £27.50.
