AN abandoned windsurfing board apparently washed up on a Mudeford beach sparked a major search by rescuers for its owner last night (Thursday).

The alarm was raised around 6.30pm, and a Southbourne Coastguard team was sent to Avon Beach.

Having found the board, they extended their search of the shoreline with help from Mudeford RNLI amid reports of a possible missing person.

However, following a social media post by HM Coastguard Solent Operations the crews made contact with the owner of the equipment who was safe and well.

The individual was given safety advice and the equipment removed from the scene before the rescuers returned to base.

Calshot RNLI was among the organisations that had taken to social media during the incident to appeal for help to trace the windsurf board’s owner.

It posted on Facebook: “It’s always a worry when kit turns up without a name or trace of its origin.”
