A BARTON care home has hit upon a novel way of keeping up morale during the current crisis with a topical reworking of a classic novelty song.

In a special video uploaded onto the White Rock Nursing Home’s Facebook page, a group of staff and residents sang I’ve Got a Lovely Bunch of Toilet Rolls to the tune of old favourite I’ve Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts.

Each brandishing a roll of one of the most highly sought-after everyday essentials, they merrily rattled through specially rewritten lyrics. These include such lines as “Singing roll-a-roll-a-roll a penny a sheet.”

Speaking to the A&T, White Rock’s owner, Siobhan Dodd, explained activity workers Emily Glen and Anne Moxom dreamt up the idea to “raise everybody’s spirits”.

She was amazed and delighted by the response, with views of the video having soared to around 7,500 by Thursday afternoon.

““Everybody that was here joined in so it gave us a good laugh,” Mrs Dodd said.

“I thought it was absolutely brilliant, and then we put it on our Facebook page.”

“It’s making us all laugh about it and the staff have been very amused.”

The uplifting video’s release came as the continually developing situation surrounding the coronavirus pandemic forced the Chestnut Avenue premises to close its doors to all but essential staff.

Arrangements have subsequently been put in place to ensure alternative methods are available for people to stay in touch with their loved ones.

These include a dedicated mobile phone number for chats, as well as setting up live video links via Skype, FaceTime and WhatsApp.

But Mrs Dodd stressed families would still be allowed to come in to visit residents who are at the end-of-life care stage.

She praised all the dedication and commitment of all her staff, adding: “For all care homes, I think we’re going to be grateful to our staff for pulling out the stops. I’ve got a really super bunch here, so we’re very lucky.”

A post about the closure on the home’s Facebook page said: “As a community we are all working together to get through this difficult time – thank you so much for all your messages of support.

“Keep watching this space as we look forward to posting our updates here. (Hope you have enjoyed the toilet roll song which has been widely viewed). In the meantime we look forward to spring and sun shiny days.”

White Rock Nursing Home, which specialises in caring for people with dementia, employs around 45 full and part-time members of staff who currently provide care for 24 residents.
