The drama unfolded as specialist police patrols investigated a string of reported burglaries and criminal damage, along with suspicious sightings of 4x4s, in the Cadnam, Bartley, Winsor and Nomansland area.

Officers spotted two suspicious vehicles in Pipers Wait car park, off Forest Road, Nomansland, just before 9.30pm on Tuesday night.

They failed to stop and a short chase ensued before one of the vehicles was pulled over and searched. Inside, a number of offensive weapons were found.

Officers detained a 44-year-old man from Totton on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon, and he was later released under investigation.

A Facebook post by police afterwards said: “Our officers will continue to patrol the local areas, but please do continue to report any suspicious incidents or crimes to us via 101 or our online reporting tool.

“As always, if a crime is in progress or there is an immediate threat to life, please dial 999.”
