A ROADSIDE car fire in Totton caused rush-hour traffic delays of up to 45 minutes for drivers this morning (Tuesday).

Part of the A326 west Totton bypass, between Spicers Hill at Colbury and Netley Marsh, was blocked by the incident, generating long queues around the area.

The occupant managed to get out of the vehicle, which was completely destroyed, according to a Hampshire Fire and Rescue spokesperson.

She said it happened by the Ringwood Road roundabout shortly after 7am and was attended by a crew from Totton fire station, plus police officers. The incident was declared closed by about 7.40am.

The traffic impact of the blaze on the southbound side was reported at about 7.45am by Hampshire County Council‘s traffic information service, Romanse.

The incident caused vehicles to back up along the A35 into Ashurst. There was also congestion on Salisbury Road in Totton as motorists tried to find other routes, causing 30-minute delays.

According to Romanse, the congestion spread into the centre of Totton, with slow-moving traffic throughout the town.

At about 8am there were further reported delays of about 25 minutes on the A337 at Lyndhurst on the southbound side of Romsey Road, between Lyndhurst Road and the high street.
