Match report: Youthful Lymington Town FC side let two-goal lead slip in 4-2 Wessex League Division One loss at the hands of Alresford Town FC

LYMINGTON Town had second-placed Alresford Town on the ropes at the break with a two-goal lead, but as in a proverbial game of two halves, the visitors roared back to seal all three points on Saturday.

Lymington have been in excellent form lately, aided in no small part by the hot streak of striker Connor Lopez, who fired home two outstanding goals to stun the high-flying visitors.

However, a robust Alresford showed their mettle after the break, scoring two goals in two minutes shortly after the restart before – with a bit of help from a lenient referee – running away with two further goals.

“It was a tough one to take after being 2-0 up at half-time only to then lose the game”, said Lymington Town Ash Buckland. “This was a lesson in the Wessex League for our young squad. We will be discussing and reviewing what went wrong; however, I think it mainly comes down to switching off when we came out for the second half, which gave Alresford the momentum, and they took it with their experience.

“They were physical and knew the dark arts to win the game, which our lads need to learn how to manage. Unfortunately, there were also some very questionable challenges that our lads were on the receiving end of, which could have been further punished but weren’t. This rattled us and helped play into the hands of Alresford in the second half as they bullied their way to the win.

“We have to learn from this result and look to bounce back as we now have to prepare for this Saturday’s game at the sports ground against Fleetlands, which will again be a challenge and physical. Hopefully, we can bounce back quickly and pick up some momentum for 2025.”

Although the hosts did not get the result they wanted, they can be proud of their efforts – particularly Callum Taylor, who was chosen as Lymington’s man-of-the-match award winner.

Lymington is back in action on Saturday at 3 p.m. when they host sixth-placed Fleetlands. Fleetlands have won their last three league matches and are on an eight-game unbeaten streak.
