Walhampton School and Precise Racing’s Scarlett Lapidus-Ewin, who learned to ski at Snowtrax Alpine Activity Centre, wins the English Alpine Championship and the Great British Alpine Championships
Walhampton School’s Scarlett Lapidus-Ewin has flown home as English and British alpine champion in her age category after successes in Bormio and Santa Caterina in Italy.
The U12 female skier won the English alpine championship in February before becoming the British alpine champion in April after securing a gold and two silvers.
“Scarlett skied beautifully and secured medals in each of her events,” said her father, Simon Ewin. “The overall points total enabled her to secure the top spot on the podium alongside Sofia Philip to be awarded the U12 English Alpine Championship.
“We all felt this would be the highlight of the season. However, Scarlett had other ideas. Two months later, we headed to Santa Caterina for the British Alpine Championships, where she performed with resilience and determination to secure two silver medals and a gold, which put her at the top of the standings and earned her the U12 British alpine title.
“As parents, we are incredibly proud; we love watching her compete, albeit with a strong sense of anxiety due to the dangerous nature of the sport. This season, several broken bones amongst her friends and peers are a testament to the risks.”
Scarlett, based in Beaulieu, learned to ski at Snowtrax Alpine Activity Centre in Dorset to prepare for a Christmas family holiday. After returning from the holiday and watching older children at the local slope, she fancied the idea of racing.
He added: “Scarlett puts 100% into everything she does; more importantly, she does it with a broad smile and a positive attitude. She’s made great friends on her short journey and memories that will last a lifetime.
“One day, Scarlett hopes to qualify for the children’s Great Britain ski team when eligible, and she’ll no doubt continue working as hard as she can to make that possible.”
Scarlett concluded: “I would like to thank all my coaches, especially Emily Evans and her team at Precise Racing. I also want to thank Walhampton School for their support alongside her teachers, who make sure I always stay on track with my studies.
“Finally, thanks to my mum, dad, and sister for all the sacrifices they have made to enable me to pursue my dreams.”
At nine years old, in May 2023, she competed in the Snowsport South Summer Series with Snowtrax and performed well enough throughout the summer to be chosen for the most improved skier award in her age group.
The talented hockey player who represents Hampshire moved to Southampton Ski Centre and trained with Monica Paluch at SASA and Darren Schmidt at TSN Snowsports. The 2024 summer series proved a great success, with Scarlett winning the U12 category with an unbeaten run of results.
Scarlett then joined Precise Racing, a UK Academy with a winter base in Schladming, Austria, at the start of 2024. With the blessing of Walhampton School, she had the opportunity to train and race for several weeks in the Alps under the eyes of expert coach Evans and her team.
Scarlett’s first competition was in January 2024 at the Welsh Alpine Championships in Switzerland, where she secured a bronze medal in the slalom event.
Fast forward 15 months, and with plenty more skiing and racing under her belt, she attended the two main 2025 alpine events for young British skiers. Firstly, the English Alpine Championships in Bormio, Italy, the home to next year’s Winter Olympic Games alpine events, during February and, subsequently, the finale to the season, the British Alpine Championships in Santa Caterina, Italy.
