THIS was a much-improved display from Lymington Town, whose two-goal salvo and a second-half penalty save was enough to earn a well-earned point against Melksham Town.

The visitors took the lead after 12 minutes, but with less than three minutes until the break, Brett Williams and Harry McGrath struck to flip the match on its head. However, Luke Ballinger notched his second to level before a penalty save from Nic Jones ensured the honours were evenly shared.

The game’s opening exchanges were cagey as both sides looked to nullify the others’ threats.

Then, with 12 minutes played, referee Sean Jenkins awarded what looked like a soft penalty after some good work from Melksham striker Kyle Tooze.

Captain Luke Ballinger showed no mercy, converting to give his side the lead.

Co-managers Dave Lewis and Paul Masters will be proud of their team’s reaction as the hosts went hunting for a leveller.

Melksham were riding their luck, with keeper Matt Hall pulling off a stunning save low down to his left before the linesman raised his flag to rule out a goal for a tight offside.

That luck could only last so long, and there was a quickfire double from on-loan striker Brett Williams and Harry McGrath, the latter making a welcome return from injury after around three weeks out.

After the restart, Lymington’s discipline began to wane with four bookings in the opening 15 minutes.

Ballinger restored parity and claimed his brace just after the hour mark when he shifted the ball onto his right before stroking it into the top corner.

With 15 minutes left, the visitors had a glorious chance to take the lead when referee Jenkins awarded another dubious penalty. However, Jones, making his first appearance for Lymington in 18 months, dived the right way to palm away Ballinger’s spot-kick.

Lymington defended resolutely down the home stretch, throwing bodies in front of everything to preserve the vital point.
