LOCAL footballer Michael Green, who has just re-signed for AFC Totton, is being honoured after 11 seasons at Eastleigh with a testimonial against former Manchester United legends.

Southampton FC icons Matt Le Tissier and Francis Benali will lead the Eastleigh side at Silverlake Stadium against notable Red Devils such as Wes Brown, Keith Gillespie, Ben Thornley, Luke Chadwick, Russell Beardsmore, Clayton Blackmore and Lee Hendrie.

The Eastleigh side will feature Green and his former teammates, many of whom played in the Spitfires’ 2013-14 Conference South-winning side.

The former Ashley Junior and Highcliffe School pupil said: “I was told about my testimonial a while back when I was coming into my 10th season, but Covid got in the way.

“We then decided to speak to Russell Beardsmore and arrange for an Ex-Man United side to come; I’m really looking forward to getting my ex-teammates back together for one more game.”

Born in New Milton before moving to Lymington, the 33-year-old left-back progressed through the ranks at Everton Youth and Burton before playing for Brockenhurst and Christchurch. He then spent two years at AFC Totton before becoming Eastleigh’s fifth-highest appearance maker.

Green added: “My time at Eastleigh was really enjoyable. We generally did pretty well in the league most seasons and had some good FA Cup runs, which were all amazing.

“The fans at the club have always been great, so they made the whole experience of the 10 years even better.

“My best highlight of Eastleigh was either winning the Conference South or playing Swindon in the FA Cup on the BBC; we drew the game and got a replay away at Swindon, which we went on to win!”

After announcing his plans in 2021 to retire, former Stags’ boss Glenn Howes persuaded him to sign for Southern Premier Division’s Dorchester Town.

Despite rumours that Green was close to signing for Lymington Town, a last-minute change of heart resulted in the 6ft defender joining Jimmy Ball’s promotion-hunting squad.

Green continued: “I heard about Totton when I was away on holiday in Turkey a couple of weeks ago. I played there before my time at Eastleigh and won the league with them, so I’m hoping I can go back and do that again this season.

“They’ve made some great signings, so it should be an exciting season.”

AFC Totton manager Ball told the club’s website: “We had a very young squad last term, so adding more experience and guile into the mix has been one of our key priorities over this summer period.”

The testimonial match is £10 for adults, £8 for concessions and £5 for children at The Silverlake Stadium on 17th July at 2pm. There are also hospitality spaces left at £65pp or tables of 10 for £600. The fee includes entry to the game, half-time refreshments, a two-course meal after the game, a Q&A with Matt Le Tissier and Francis Benali, an auction and a matchday programme for everyone on the table.
