New Forest Golf Club’s Roy Nelson has the last laugh with Bill Murray Trophy victory
Although initially rather chilly, the bright sun eventually warmed as 47 New Forest Golf Club seniors competed for the Bill Murray Trophy, the first trophy competition to be played off the white tees this year.
Playing Par/Bogey format, where a nett birdie or better scores one point, a nett par scores nothing, and anything else scores minus one, only the top four players in each division avoided finishing with negative scores.
Division Two took countback calculations to decide the first two places, with Robin Swanston eventually emerging ahead of John Ireland.
No countback was required in Division One, with Roy Nelson finishing two clear points ahead of the entire field to win the Bill Murray Trophy with a plus-five score.
Dave Titchmarsh won the nearest the pin prize with an excellent tee shot that finished just a couple of feet from the pin on the second green.
Results – Division One: 1, Roy Nelson; 2, Barry Nicholas; 3, Phil Kilburn. Division Two: 1, Robin Swanston; 2, John Ireland; 3, Terry Jones.
