Match report: Fawley AFC relegation almost garaunteed after 2-0 Wessex League Division One loss to AFC Aldermaston

Fawley AFC made a heroic bid for league survival, but defeat in their penultimate fixture against AFC Aldermaston on Saturday has all but guaranteed their place inside the division’s bottom three.

The Oilers, under manager Lee Shepherd, picked up 14 points from seven games before back-to-back defeats, meaning they need the side above them, Totton & Eling, to lose their remaining three games with a -17 goal difference to survive.

After hitting the road for the final time and travelling to Waterside Park to face AFC Aldermaston, the Oilers were the better side for the vast majority of the first 45 minutes after an early red card for Aldermaston’s Connor Paxford.

However, as the match entered first-half added time, Josh Lambden stunned the Oilers, firing past Jamie Bruce to put the hosts in the lead.

Fawley chased the game and could have levelled multiple times, but the second goal, scored by Simeon Weekes, knocked the stuffing from the visitors, who also finished the match with 10 players after a late red.

The Oilers hope to finish their last game of the season when they host Amesbury Town on Saturday.
