Hampshire Academy’s Ben Mayes hit a half-century to ease England U19s to victory over South Africa in the opening ODI at Western Province.
Hampshire Academy starlet Ben Mayes carried off the man-of-the-match award after his half-century eased England’s Young Cricketers to a comfortable five-wicket win over South Africa in the opening One Day International at Western Province.
The Lyndhurst resident, who attends The King Edward VI sixth form, hit an elegant 51 as England chased down South Africa’s 87 all out in 18.3 overs. The junior Proteas were 33-6 at one stage, writes Mike Vimpany.
After overcoming some rapid new-ball fast bowling, Mayes set to work pointing England to victory. His confidence soared after hitting a straight drive four.
Mayes went on to hit a mid-wicket six and seven more fours, two off his legs being particularly eye-catching. He went on to score his 51 off 48 balls, adding 64 with Archie Vaughan (29), their stand taking England to the brink of victory.
South Africa, however, emerged victorious in the three-match ODI series by winning the second and third youth internationals.
