LYMINGTON Town played out a thrilling Russell Cotes Cup tie, scoring a last-minute winner to move into the quarter-finals.

It appeared that Fleet Town had forced a penalty shoot-out with their 85th-minute leveller, but Nathan Hurst stepped up with a captain's goal to lead his side to victory.

With the two sides playing each other two weeks previously in the Hampshire Senior Cup – Lymington winning 3-1 – Linnets co-managers Dave Lewis and Paul Masters hoped for much of the same at the Sports Ground.

Lymington started the match with two new signings in the line-up: 21-year-old goalkeeper Callum Coulter and 19-year-old defender James Gorman.

The hosts took the lead after just 15 minutes through Freddie Bullard, continuing his fine form in front of goal.

The remainder of the first half was an even contest, with both keepers called into action to reach the break at 1-0.

Early in the second half, midfielder Sam Shearer and Ollie Dennett came onto the field, with the latter spurning a glorious chance to take a two-goal lead, his tame shot easily collected by the visiting keeper.

Midway through the half, the Lymington management sent attacker Dom Thelen into the action, and he immediately put pressure on visitors' defence.

However, with just five minutes left, the next goal went to Fleet, with Durell Brown beating débutante keeper Coulter.

Lymington piled forward and forced Fleet deep into their half, and the pressure told when skipper Hurst popped up with the winning goal.

They play Moneyfields in the quarter-finals on 11th January.
