AS the lowest-placed side in the division, expectations for Lymington Town against third-placed AFC Portchester were low, but they shocked their hosts by taking an early lead before finally succumbing with minutes left.
Unfortunately for the south coast side, they could not hold on to their advantage, and AFC Portchester battled back to win 3-1.
The hosts made a bright start, with Charlie Williamson finding space on the edge of the box. However, Lymington keeper Dale Hind saved well before a rapid attack led to Harry Yates finding the back of the net, stunning The On-Site Group Stadium into silence.
Williamson was proving a handful, and after twisting and turning past defenders, he sparked an attack that finished with Scott Jones racing through one-on-one with the keeper.
With only Hind standing in the way, the shot-stopper did excellently, denying the goal-hunting striker.
With half an hour played, the heroics ran dry, and Hind could not stop Jones for a second time, with the long-haired attacker making it 1-1.
With six minutes of the match left, Lymington could be excused for starting to dream of a shock point, but George Barker made it 2-1 before Josh Benfield added another a minute later.
The result is Lymington’s third defeat in a row, leaving the side languishing eight points clear of safety.
Lymington Town plays eighth-placed Laverstock & Ford in the league on Saturday at the Lymington Sports Ground at 3pm.
