Match report: Lymington Town FC suffer 2-0 Wessex League Division One loss at the hands of Clanfield FC

Lymington Town came out second best against a spirited Clanfield, slipping to a two-goal loss at the Sports Ground on Saturday.

The two sides entered the contest level on points – although Lymington Town hold three games in hand over Clanfield – but Clanfield earned three points away from home for the first time since November.

“Saturday’s result was a tough one to take”, said Lymington Town manager Ash Buckland, who holds a UEFA B coaching licence. “Losing 2-0 at home to Clanfield wasn’t what we were hoping for, and as a group, we know we didn’t hit the levels we’re capable of.

“Credit to Clanfield, they were organised and took their chances when they came. That said, we need to be better in key areas. We lacked a bit of composure and gave away possession too easily at times.

“Having reviewed the game back, we do have some positives to take: we had 61% possession and 11 shots on goal, but we just didn’t make it telling.”

Buckland added: “Scott Barron was another positive, who we signed last week. He came on and looked comfortable. I’m sure he is going to enhance the squad in an important area.

“It’s important we don’t dwell on the result. We’ll regroup this week in training, look at what needs improving, and come back stronger. I’ve got belief in this squad and its ability to bounce back.

“Next Saturday, we are away to Ash United, and it will be important as we look to put in a bounce-back performance.”

Lymington Town have rocketed up the league after a difficult start, but goals from Eric Kerage and Harvey Cooper were enough for the visitors to seal a hard-earned victory.

After the match, Lymington Town’s number one fan, who went viral on TikTok after a video of her rousing team talk was posted online, chose defender Aaron Christie as the side’s man of the match.

Lymington returns to league action on Saturday when travelling to face Ash United at the Smurfit Kappa Stadium at 3pm.
