LYMINGTON finally got a win under their belt at Chapel Gate against Bournemouth, but it was a nail-biting finish going down to the last ball of the match.

In a game dominated by the bowlers on a damp wicket, which dried out gradually during the day, the quicker bowlers did well, and scoring was difficult with only 13 fours and one six all day.

Lymington’s stand-in captain, Gareth Berg, lost the toss for the third time this season, and the omens were not good with Lymington soon two wickets down to openers Cole Rushforth (2-13 in seven overs) and Ollie Beckton (2-19 in 10 overs).

Josh Royan (14) was promoted to number three, and Kamran Dhariwal, who top scored with 34 runs, put on 44 for the third wicket, which took 18 overs before Aidan Meyer (2-29) had Royan LBW.

With three fours, Berg (28) provided some acceleration to the innings before succumbing LBW to Rob Pack (2-19).

The later-order batsmen managed to ensure that the full 50 overs were used up for the first time this season, with Ed Freeman finishing 12 and the undefeated duo of Guy Layman and Liam Thompson finishing with eight and seven runs, respectively.

The Lymington bowlers were equally tight. They were led by Berg (3-31) and Layman (3-22 in and overs), who snared a double wicket maiden, and Monam Abbas (1-19).

Most of the Bournemouth batters managed to get established before getting out, with Simon Woodruff (30) top scoring, with seven others scoring between 10 and 18 runs.

The tension built up around the ground as the match entered the final over. The last wicket pair of Cole Rushforth (18 not out) and Ollie Breckon (4) scrambled five runs against Thompson (1-28), who was brought back on to bowl at the death.

With three runs required for victory off the last ball, Rushforth missed it and a bye was conceded before keeper Robbie Hemmings ran out Breckon to see Lymington home by one run.

When Hemmings knocked off the bales, the Lymington celebrations caused some confusion among spectators as the Bournemouth batters were still running.

Lymington is at home against St Cross Symondians in another limited-overs match this Saturday with a 12.30pm start.
