LYMINGTON Town’s long wait for a league victory continues after fourth-placed AFC Portchester cruised to a straightforward three-goal win at the Lymington Sports Ground.
High-flying Portchester raced into a three-minute lead, and they never let Lymington – who have yet to pick up a league win this season – back into the game, with Ryan Woodford’s second and a Jake Raine goal completing the scoring.
Despite the disappointing result, the Lymington Town faithful were delighted to see the return of two familiar faces.
Luke Ansell and Jesse Rabin – who returns to his boyhood club – re-signed and made the starting line-up.
The Lymington defending for the opening goal left much to be desired, with a simple cross into the box finding two unmarked Portchester players, with Woodford nodding a low header past the helpless keeper.
The visitors came within a whisker of making it 2-0 on two occasions, with Lee Wort’s header hitting the post and Woodford clattering the crossbar, but the half-time whistle came with the match finely balanced at 1-0.
With 10 minutes of the second half played, Woodford again proved he is hard to stop, with the powerful player shrugging off markers to nod a corner home.
The near one-way traffic resumed, and before long, the game’s final goal arrived when Jake Raine fired a low effort through a maze of players, finding the far corner of the net.
Credit to Lymington, they never stopped battling until the end, with a dramatic series of goalline clearances in the final minutes epitomising their attitude.
Lymington face Andover New Street on Saturday at 3pm.
