Ellie Monks bags eighth win as she lowers Brockenhurst parkrun record for second time

RED-hot Ellie Monks lowered her own Brockenhurst parkrun record for the second week before joking that her incentive was to get to a local bakery before her favourite treat sold out.

Monks led the men home at the New Forest-based course, taking the outright line honours for an eighth time while shaving another three seconds off her record after lowering it last week.

When asked about her recent good form, the Southampton AC member, who lowered her record to 17:22, said: “I have our whippet as a training partner, and it seems to have really helped running with Canicross New Forest [a running group specifically for people with dogs].

She added: “Parkrun is great because my partner Andy and I often do the course check with our dog beforehand. He pulls me along, chasing Andy on the bike, so it’s a good warm-up. The marshals are always brilliant and give encouragement.

“I just felt really good on the day with the cooler temperatures. I think it’s just about being consistent and enjoying it. It’s nice to know you can still get better, even in your 40s! We go to the bakery in Brockenhurst afterward, so there’s an incentive to get there quickly before they sell out!”

Monks also set the highest age grade score, with second-placed Adam Jundi, who set the highest male age grade score after finishing 16 seconds behind Monks, earning his 94th first-finisher honours.

The first junior was first-time visitor M11 James Cook with a time of 19:30, while the first girl, W15 Daisy Johnson, has run all of her six parkruns at Brockenhurst since 2017 and set a new parkrun personal best (PB) of 21:32.

On a freezing morning, the 16 volunteers who made the event possible earned the gratitude of everyone connected to Brockenhurst parkrun. They were Karwan Moutasim, Andrew Vaughan, Maxine Slade, Charles and Rosanna Fox, Monks, Mike Jurd, Katrin Pritchard, Vivienne Baxter, Barbara Walton, Lee Harris, Chris Potter, Hollie Kenway, Ellen Dine, Paula Cooper, and Mick Anglim.
