NEW Milton Town moved to fourth in the table after a relatively straightforward two-goal home victory over Whitchurch United.

The Linnets won their fifth game in eight after goals from Barney Stone and man-of-the-match winner Callum McHale.

Matt Maybury’s side has been in excellent form lately, and the side hold the league’s best goal-scoring record with 24.

The hosts shaded the early exchanges in what was an open game, with both sides having enough opportunities to feel encouraged.

The game’s first goal arrived after the Jamboys left a hole in midfield, with the ball spun out to Stone on the right wing.

The Linnets youth product drove forward and made no mistake, firing past the keeper to register his seventh goal of the season in the 35th minute.

Stone’s strike lifted him to second in the league’s goal-scoring chart, level with teammate Brad Snelling.

The Jamboys had their best spell after the opener, but the half-time whistle arrived with New Milton still ahead.

Keeper Ollie Bull took a whack just after the restart but could continue after a short break to receive treatment.

New Milton kept plugging away, and as the match entered the 84th minute, McHale scored his side’s second with a lovely strike that flew into the top corner.

The Linnets travel to face Totton & Eling in a league match on Saturday at 3pm.
