Reenen du Toit wins New Milton Chess Club’s annual Christmas Frolic

NEW Milton Chess Club’s annual Christmas Frolic was won by Reenen du Toit, who defeated Jamie Sen in the final to earn the Mihail Nutu Trophy.

Each game had a time limit of 10 minutes per player, with an extra three seconds added per move, with 14 players divided into two divisions.

After each player had played the other players in their division, the winner of each division went forward to contest the final.

In an exciting encounter, Du Toit defeated Sen and was declared the winner, with the trophy presented by club chairman John Beasant.

In the Dorset Chess Congress last weekend, Tim Jones performed excellently, coming second out of 16 players in the section for players rated up to 1850.

The club has teams in the second and fifth divisions of the Bournemouth League. The B Team has made an excellent start to the season with four wins from five matches, with notable contributions from Beasant, Ross Mackay, Rachel Richardson, and Barry Jolly, currently leading the fifth division.

Meanwhile, the A Team has struggled against higher-rated teams, with one draw from four games.

The chess club is always looking for new members. For more information, visit newmiltonchess.wordpress.com
