Match report: Fleetlands FC crush Lymington Town FC 8-1 in vicious Wessex League Division One mauling

Lymington Town endured a nightmare afternoon as they were dismantled 8-1 at the Lymington Sports Ground by promotion-chasing Fleetlands on Saturday.

Lymo came into the tie at the Sports Ground looking to reverse the momentum after a run of one win in their last 15 games, a 3-1 win over Ash United at the start of October.

However, any optimism was brutally quashed by a clinical Fleetlands side sitting second in the Wessex League Division One.

The Coptermen took the lead on 24 minutes through Curt Robbins, and they did not look back from there. Kelvin Robinson doubled the advantage with a composed finish just before the half-hour mark, and Robbins soon added his second to make it 3-0.

Lymington gave their supporters something to cheer about when winger Jack Darnton struck back a minute later with a neat finish to reduce the deficit to two briefly.

But the floodgates soon reopened. Christian Bennett netted Fleetlands’ fourth in the 42nd minute, before Robbins completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot just before half-time after a foul in the area. Keeper Charlie Fry, making his first team debut after being promoted from the development side, guessed correctly, but Robbins’s effort had too much power.

Lymo managed to stem the tide for much of the second half, but the visitors weren’t done. Sam Lewis added a sixth with just under 20 minutes remaining, before Connor May made it seven in the 75th minute.

A miserable day was compounded in injury time, when an own goal made it 8-1 – a humbling result for the hosts and one they will want to forget quickly.
