Wessex League football: Christchurch thumped by Bemerton Heath
Wessex Premier
Christchurch FC 0
Bemerton Heath Harlequins 4
Priory were at the wrong end of a kicking handed out by a Bemerton Heath side challenging for promotion.
The visitors are six points off second place with two games in hand, and their superiority told against mid-table Christchurch.
The home side found themselves 2-0 down before 10 minutes were on the clock, as an unmarked Danny Young finished from Greg Peel's cross on two minutes, and Stuart Green poked in during a goalmouth scramble seven minutes later, despite a fine save from Harry Dillon.
Green had a glorious chance to add a third but Dillon was on hand with a sensational double save which injured the attacker in the process, forcing him off.
Harlequins continued to pepper the Church goal, but Dillon again stood strong with two outstanding saves.
With half-time approaching, Christchurch rallied with a raft of chances which were repelled by the Bemerton defence, before the visitors hit the post.
Awwal Abubakar had a fine opportunity to pull one back for Church on 55 minutes, but smashed wide as he failed to keep his balance.
Despite the added pressure from the home side, Harlequins added a third in the 80th minute, George Higgins finishing well at the back post from Young's cross.
Peel rounded off the match, racing towards goal and thumping an effort off the post which he then put away.
Christchurch take on Cowes Sports away tonight (Tuesday) and host Alresford Town on Saturday.
