Two-time Olympic bronze medallist Emma Wilson has won the British Elite Athletes’ Association’s (BEAA) Athletes’ Athlete of the Month award after winning the Princess Sofia Trophy

Two-time Olympic bronze medallist Emma Wilson has been recognised by Britain’s elite sportspeople following her success at the Trofeo Princesa Sofia, which marks the beginning of the Olympic sailing season.

Wison was chosen as the winner of the British Elite Athletes’ Association’s (BEAA) Athletes’ Athlete of the Month award after winning the prestigious regatta’s top prize, the Princess Sofia Trophy in Mallorca, after winning 14 out of 21 races in the foiling windsurfing.

Reflecting on her performance, the former Ballard School pupil told the BEAA: “I was happy with my week in Palma. I had some solid races, and they just seemed to keep going well.

“Following on from the Olympics last year, it’s nice to see what I’ve trained for and progressed show in the race results. It feels good for Sam and me, my coach, to see the rewards of our work.

“It is up there [as a career achievement]. Winning the bronze medal in Tokyo was probably the highest, and then, the second-highest is winning that outright trophy in Palma because no British woman has ever done it before.

“It’s pretty cool to be recognised like that – it’s powerful.”

The BEAA presents the Athletes’ Athlete of the Month award on behalf of its members – athletes funded by UK Sport’s World Class Programme – and recognises competitive achievements, personal development, inspiring comebacks, charity work, and awareness-raising.

Wilson was up against Emily Campbell (weightlifting), Jordan Houlden (diving), Jess Liddon (shooting) and Team Mouat (curling) for the prize.

“It’s super cool [to win this award],” she added.

“I’m a mega sports fan, and when I saw the people I was nominated with, it was incredible. I mean, everyone nominated is a great athlete, and so I’m just really happy and grateful to have been voted athlete of the month. I just hope I can keep pushing forward.”

Athletes chose the winner of the awards via the BEAA’s monthly member emails.
