FA Vase Fifth Round

Littlehampton Town FC 3

Brockenhurst FC 3

(Brock lost 4-1 on penalties)

BROCKENHURST staged a dramatic comeback to level the match in the last minute before Littlehampton Town went on to win the resulting penalty shootout.

The Badgers exited the FA Vase despite fighting back from 1-0 and 3-1 down thanks to goals from Silvano Obeng, Christie Ward and Alex Haynes' injury-time leveller.

Southern Combination League leaders Littlehampton Town were reduced to 10 men late on, but keeper Shane Murphy led his team to a 4-1 shootout victory in front of 1,276 spectators.

Joe Benn put the hosts in the lead after 15 minutes when he turned home a quickly executed half volley.

Obeng then levelled the match after stroking the ball past James Binfield with one minute of the first-half left after Ward delivered a defence-splitting through ball.

After good work from Joe Chamberlain and Kieran O'Donnell, the badgers almost took the lead, but the Marigolds scored next when Aaron Capon turned home a fizzing cross before Lee Garnham added a third.

Young Ward then got the Badgers believing again after firing past the keeper at the near post after the ball bounced invitingly in the area.

With the final whistle incoming, Dave Herbert's horrendous two-footed challenge on Ward earned a second yellow before a sustained period of pressure allowed Haynes to score in the 96th minute.

That was as good as it got for the Badgers, with Matt Sheedy being the only successful penalty taker as the Marigolds won 3-1.

Speaking to BBC Radio Solent, Brock manager Pat McManus said: "Obviously we are disappointed, but I think overall, we feel that we underperformed when we got here.

"From a goals-against perspective, we got undone by three balls into the box that we didn't deal with properly.

"It was a case of we were continually trying to get ourselves back into the game.

"We left it effectively to the last minute to take it to penalties, and even then, we felt their penalties were better than ours.

"It was just a case of probably a missed opportunity based on the way we performed.

"Overall, there were patches of the way we are used to playing, but we just felt we weren't really ourselves. I don't think that was down to how they played; we underperformed."
