Letters: Southampton eyeing Waterside again

Southampton City Council must be rubbing their hands together at the thought of taking over the Waterside after failing to do so for the second time 75 years ago.

In the late 1930s they tried to take over what is now call the the Waterside, ie the western edge of Southampton Water, and extend down to Hamble on the eastern side, fortunately the Second World War put a hold on this.

But in 1947 they tried again. In 1948 they produced a map showing all the intended proposed riverside industrial areas, all the way down from Ealing to Calshot; there were not many gaps.

Fortunately New Forest Rural District Council rejected it, but now it looks as though it will be imposed on us with no say and no referendum. The government should not be offering bribes of money as they can turn off the golden goose at any time.

We have suffered in the past when the government have devolved responsibilities to the county councils, etc, and expected the local population to pick up the bill.

Marchwood, Hythe, Dibden Purlieu, Holbury, Fawley, Blackfield and Langley were all villages in the New Forest prior to 1960, and should remain part of the New Forest.
