Letters: Residents are doing their bit on recycling

I REFER to your front page article in the A&T ‘Worried and disgusted by bin plans’ (4th Oct) and the photo with the note ‘NFDC says wheelie bins will improve recycling’.

More often than not our recycling bags are put on the same lorry as the black bags and the crusher system activated, not taken out at the end of the road and put in the recycling lorry as has been stated before.

Please NFDC, put your own house in order and then our recycling rate will improve after all the effort we as residents all put in.

Bin service ‘sleight of hand’
Bin service ‘sleight of hand’

The economics of moving to bins is also questionable as, having observed the recent change to bins for green waste, it takes three times as long to collect and empty the same number of properties as when they had the original green bags.

It is all a sleight of hand to cut the level of service for an increase in council tax.

If the council can prove differently please provide us in the A&T publication with a clear financial case rather than all the ‘smoke and mirrors’.

ON telephoning the council to ask why my bin had not been collected, I was informed the following:

It now appears that if one requires to have a green waste wheelie bin collected from the actual New Forest, the bin has to be put outside your gate by 6am and it does not matter that they can be knocked over by the Forest livestock who can then eat the contents and probably die.

The bin men are not allowed to put a foot on your territory. This was part of the terms of having a wheelie bin.

If through age and being unable to get the bin outside one’s gate you can have assisted collection, in which case you have to leave the gate open from 6am (bin men are unable to lift a catch) until such time as the bin is collected and the livestock have demolished the garden in the meantime.

All this was explained to me when I phoned to ask the council why my garden waste had not been collected. I think I am now about to have a heart attack with exploding blood pressure.

Can our local council get any more stupid? Yes, I forget, the main wheelie bins have not come in yet. What more stupidity is in store for the local residents who have to pay in bin loads for ruining our area via council tax, etc?

Please, has anyone got some common sense?
