Letter: Short-term savings a bad deal
I read with concern of these cost-saving initiatives by Hampshire County Council.
Have lessons not been learned, yet again? Short-term savings invariably result in bad outcomes, and this will be one of them.
Previous attempts to frustrate easy, environmentally efficient ways of accessing waste disposal have resulted in costly and unsightly flytipping and garden bonfires.
Apart from despoiling our Forest and surrounding areas, flytipping results in costly removal, a cost to the council. Private land owners also bear the cost of removal in some cases. Others will choose not to bother.
Responsible citizens will doubtless drive extra miles to a remaining centre. That’s not good for air quality and health which the council claims to be eager to improve.
We also read about the introduction of domestic waste bins. Another costly exercise we are told will increase waste recycling.
There is a rhetoric reality gap for all to see. Holistic thinking seems alien to many management practitioners. The question will arise: who is going to pay to improve council finances?
A debate for another day.
