Letter: I have a right to ride my scooter on the road

Sir – Due to a problem with one of my knees and also problems with my back, I find that the best form of transport is a mobility scooter.

It would seem that quite a few motorists, older people as well as younger ones, have a major problem with mobility scooters being ridden / driven on the roads.

I have had an old lady, shout out of the passenger window at me, “You don’t pay road tax – get on the pavement.”

The best bit is she and her husband had a car registered as disabled, so they don’t pay road tax on their car.

This morning I received a letter from DVLA telling me my Scooter is, in fact, taxed.

I have also had younger drivers try to intimidate me by driving very close to me, almost hitting me. Also today, the driver of a sign written van, blasted his horn at me after he had passed me.

Many, many more seem to think that a mobility scooter should not be driven on the roads.....wrong.

Check your Highway Code (if you still have one); most mobility scooters have a top speed of eight miles an hour for driving on the road, with a max speed of four miles an hour when on a pavement.

One other point that should be noted is the state of our local pavements. If you have a problem with your back, the last thing you want is to be tossed about while trying to navigate around all the remains of services, electric, gas, water company’s etc when they have dug holes in the pavements for whatever reason and then not put the surface of the pavement back in good order.

A very frustrated disabled registered driver.
