Letter: ‘Do your research before purchasing new EV tech on Forest”

Iain Robinson (A&T Letters 10th May) is a clear example of someone who has not done any research before purchasing an expensive piece of technology.

To rely on public chargers for day-to-day charging of an EV is foolhardy and expensive. Anyone buying an EV should install their own domestic charger as a bare minimum, and preferably a smart one.

Secondly, it is well worth having PV panels installed on the roof in order to deliver free electricity for a great part of the year.

Thirdly, change your energy supplier to one which offers an EV specific contract. My supplier, Octopus, buys my exported electricity at 15p per kWh, and allows me to charge at 7.5p per kWh. My most recent bill indicated that last month I spent about £15 on enough electricity for around 700 miles of driving. I’d like to see any ICE vehicle come anywhere near that level of cost efficiency.

Public chargers cost so much because the operators do not benefit from the domestic price cap on electricity, so only use them when travelling.
