Kidical Mass cycling movement coming to Lymington

A WORLDWIDE movement for cyclists is coming to Lymington for the first time this weekend.

Kidical Mass will see people of all ages take two laps of a marshalled, one-mile road circuit in the town on Sunday 28th April.

Riders will set out from the town hall at 2pm, following a route along Avenue Road, Southampton Road, the High Street and New Street.

The police will be at the town hall from 1.20pm, offering free bike security coding before and after the ride.

Organisers said participants need to gather at 1.45pm for a briefing before setting out from the town hall car park. Under-18s must be accompanied by an adult, and helmets and high-visibility clothing are advised.

Sally Cowie, who helped organise the local event, said: “We are really looking forward to this, which is the first of its kind in Lymington.

“These events have been taking place in larger towns all over the country, including Southampton and Christchurch, but they have also been happening all over the world. “

She continued: “We feel Lymington needs an event such as this because even though it is a small town, it has a large amount of traffic which makes it difficult to cycle to school, work or local destinations.

“We hope lots of people come and take part to make a statement that we all want to be able to cycle in our local commutes but need to feel safer.”

Among those taking part on Sunday’s ride will be Grace, who also helped organise the event, and her daughter Rebecca.

The founders of Kidical Mass describe it as a worldwide movement “spreading the idea that children and young people should be able to independently and safely cycle wherever they live”.

Its mission statement continues: “Cyclists of all ages cycle together on the streets to reclaim the road space in a colourful, friendly bicycle demonstration.

“The afternoon should be a great experience for all, giving people the chance to try out cycling in a group.”

Participants can choose to complete one circuit or two, and trained bike leaders will be present.
