CONSTRUCTION will start at Ringwood School this month to build a “desperately needed” new dining hall for pupils.

The project is the result of four years of planning and fundraising, and the addition will also provide space for activities including performances and exams.

The Barn will sit up to 650 people and contain a cinema-grade projection system, theatrical sound system and moveable lighting truss.

There will also be a dedicated technical control room which can be used to teach BTEC production and performing arts within the school.

Head teacher Leanne Symonds had previously told the A&T the facility was “desperately needed” by the school.

“Ringwood School is an oversubscribed, successful and high-achieving school, but the facilities we are able to offer our young people at lunchtime are much too crowded and insufficient,” she said.

“The new building will ensure we can provide a safer, light, warm space to eat in a civilised manner, thus providing outstanding opportunities for physical, social and emotional development of all students and the best conditions for their learning.”

Sam Coombes, operations manager for Ringwood School, said the project was the “result of many years’ hard work”.

“Our school community is the heartbeat of the town, and our students are as excited about bringing this space to Ringwood as we are,” she said. “I really look forward to working with them on the many planned fundraising events over the coming months and to the launch of The Barn in summer 2022.”

The project has been made possible thanks to a £2.1m grant from the Education and Skills Funding Agency’s Condition Improvement Fund.
