Pamela Barnwell (88) from Fordingbridge, who died in animal incident at Godshill Cricket, off the B3078 Roger Penny Way, suffered crush injuries, inquest hears




AN elderly woman who died after an incident reportedly involving animals on the New Forest suffered crush injuries, an inquest has heard.

Pamela Barnwell (88), of Normandy Way, Fordingbridge, was found critically injured at Godshill Cricket, off the B3078 Roger Penny Way, shortly before 2pm last Monday.

As reported in the A&T, she was said to have been lying on the ground with cattle and ponies around her, and was taken by ambulance to Southampton General Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

A hearing into her death, opened at Winchester Coroners’ Court this morning (Tuesday), heard the preliminary cause.

This was said to have been pelvic and retroperitoneal haemorrhage, and polytrauma, with Mrs Barnwell having a background of ischaemic heart disease.

Adjourned, a full inquest is due to be held at the same court on 15th September 2025.

The verderers of the New Forest, which protect and regulate the area’s commoning practices, previously released a short statement after the incident.

“The verderers are aware of an incident that occurred at Godshill Cricket pitch, where a lady was observed to be laying on the ground surrounded by cattle and ponies,” the statement said.

“[On Tuesday morning], we [were] advised that the lady sadly died. The verderers extend their sincere condolences to the lady’s family and friends.

“As the incident is currently under investigation by the police, the verderers will make no further comment at this time.”

Hampshire police is leading the investigation, with the Health and Safety Executive also looking into the incident.
