THE MP for Christchurch Sir Christopher Chope has addressed the House of Commons this morning (Thursday) to thank PM Boris Johnson on the day he set quit as leader of the Tories.

Sir Christopher, who in June told critics of Mr Johnson to "put up or shut up" after backing the Prime Minister in a confidence vote, said: "May I thank the Prime Minister for his service to our great nation and also to the people of Ukraine.

"And I think people will rue the day he was forced to resign.

He added: "Isn't there a lot to be said for having a smaller cabinet, fewer ministers and hardly any parliamentary private secretaries, and can we have a pilot to show how successful that is going to be."

As reported in the A&T, New Forest West MP Sir Desmond Swayne tweeted he was backing Fareham MP Suella Braverman for the next Prime Minister.

It follows an unprecedented set of government resignations over the past 24 hours including Health Secretary Sajid Javid and Chancellor Rishi Sunak.
