Safety warning at Picket Post and Deerleap as New Forest pony drifts set for this weekend

WARNINGS have been made for the public to avoid the areas of two pony round-ups this weekend.

On Friday the cycle route at Bratley will be closed for the drift between Picket Post to Bratley View, and Picket Post to the A31. Picket Post car park will also be closed.

Another drift will be on Sunday at Ipley where the cycle route will be shut from Deerleap. The car park there will also be closed as well as at Longdown and Marchwood Inclosure.

"Please avoid the area of the planned drifts, respect the car park closures and do not verge park," the verderers said.

"The drifts are an essential part of the welfare and management of the Forest herd."

The drifts will continue until early November and involve about 40 round-ups of New Forest stock by owners and agisters. They make welfare checks, data recording, collar fittings and hoof trimming.

Each drift can take several hours and start as early as 8am. The public is discouraged from watching because of the dangers of driving wild animals and they can unwittingly cause ponies to escape.
