RESIDENTS are being warned about bogus New Forest District Council workers calling with false information about local banks.

Both NFDC and Hampshire police have urged people to be “extra cautious” following reports of a number of incidents in which fraudsters have advised victims their bank is closing.

The council said on Facebook that all callers’ credentials should be thoroughly checked to ensure they are legitimate.

“A genuine member of staff will never mind being asked to call back or to prove their identity,” the post said.

“Take your time, don’t be rushed on the phone and, if in any doubt, hang up and check with a friend or relative.”

Householders are urged not to open the door to cold callers or accept help from those who want money up-front for services such as shopping. Debit or credit cards or PIN numbers should never be handed out to anyone.

Those concerned about callers claiming to be from NFDC should contact its customer services team on 023 8028 5000.
