Met Office issues yellow weather warning for thunderstorms across New Forest and Christchurch
A weather warning has been issued for thunderstorms to hit the New Forest and Christchurch
The Met Office yellow alert, which runs from midday tomorrow (Friday) until 8pm, states that while many places will remain dry, thunderstorms and heavy showers could cause disruption in some parts.
Damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes is possible, and driving conditions may be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus.
There could also be delays to train services and some short-term loss of power and other services is likely.
A spokesperson for the national weather agency said: “A few thundery showers may be present across southern and south-east England early on Friday, but from the middle of the day they are expected to develop more widely within the warning area.
“Whilst some places will remain dry, where thundery showers do occur, they will bring frequent lightning, gusty winds, potentially some large hail, as well as brief spells of heavy rain.”
Up to 25mm of rain fall may fall within an hour, the organisation said, with a “very small” chance of 30-40mm falling in three hours, the latter most likely across south-west England.
It adds: “If you find yourself outside and hear thunder, protect yourself by finding a safe enclosed shelter, such as a car.
“Do not shelter under or near trees, or other structures which may be struck by lightning. If you are on an elevated area move to lower ground.”
