Met Office issues yellow weather warning for New Forest and Christchurch over Storm Éowyn

STORM Éowyn is expected to bring “very” strong winds, heavy rain and possibly snow to the New Forest and Christchurch on Friday.

The Met Office is warning of disruption for the region with a yellow weather warning to cover the whole day.

Weather experts warn the storm could damage buildings and blow tiles from roofs, with power cuts “likely” and potentially affecting other services such as mobile phone networks.

Road, rail, air and ferry services are likely to be affected, with people warned to expect longer journey times and cancellations.

Roads and bridges may close, and the storm could see flying debris, as well as large waves and beach material being thrown onto seafronts, coastal roads and properties.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “Whilst there is some uncertainty in the track of Éowyn, a spell of very strong winds is likely, initially southeasterly before turning westerly, with peak gusts of 50 to 60mph inland, 60 to 70mph around some coasts and hills.”

The Met Office advises people to protect themselves and their property from strong winds by securing loose items outside their homes such as bins, garden furniture, sheds and tents.

The spokesperson added: “Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.

“People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do – consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.

“If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves. Even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea. Take care if walking near cliffs – know your route and keep dogs on a lead.”
