Burton Post Office faces closure as postmaster Gilly Cole steps down after 17 years

BURTON’S Post Office is set to close in the new year when its current postmaster steps down after 17 years.

Gilly Cole, who runs the branch on Salisbury Road, announced in a post online that she would be leaving the branch on Salisbury Road on 23rd January.

Stating it was no longer viable, she said use of the internet, rising prices and service changes brought her commission-based salary down below acceptable levels.

Ms Cole declined to comment when approached by the A&T, but a Post Office spokesperson confirmed the closure pending a replacement being found.

“Burton Post Office is due to close on Tuesday 23rd January due to the resignation of the postmaster,” the spokesperson said.

“The vacancy is advertised.”

They continued: “We want to hear from interested retailers to discuss the business opportunity, they would then [need] to formally apply.

“If there is a suitable applicant we would work to keep any temporary closure to a minimum.”

In her announcement, Ms Cole said she believed the Post Office was unable to continue providing the village facility.

“It has been a privilege to look after Burton post office for the last 17 years,” she wrote.

“During this time, I have made wonderful friends. I feel humbled by the support that I have received from yourselves and the amazing people that I have worked with in the post office and shop.

“It really has been appreciated and I will leave with a very heavy heart.”

The comments under her post was inundated by hundreds expressing their sadness and support.

“You will be greatly missed as well as the services that you provide,” one wrote.

“You are such a happy, caring, helpful person. I wish you well for the future, Gill.”

Another posted: “You provide such a wonderful, cheerful service and are a community asset. The price of progress is dehumanising our local infrastructure.

“You will be very much missed. Totally understand why you have had to take this decision but wishing you all the very best for the future.”

The nearest alternative post office branches for Burton residents are Bransgore, Christchurch, Stour Road and Bure.
