“THESE vandals need to be caught” – that was the message from a Pennington resident after walls and windows at the local leisure centre were daubed with graffiti twice in the past week.

Staff from New Forest District Council’s Lymington leisure centre discovered offenders had targeted the rear of the building when they visited the site in North Street last Friday morning.

More graffiti was found to have been sprayed during that night when staff returned the following morning.

A spokesperson for NFDC said it had reported both incidents to Hampshire police and provided CCTV footage.

One nearby resident, who asked to remain anonymous, told the A&T they were “truly heartbroken” to see the vandalism on two brick walls and at least six windows.

“These vandals need to be caught,” they said. “This will surely take thousands of pounds to clear up – money that I am sure the NFDC would rather spend on helping the struggling community get back on its feet after lockdown.”

The NFDC spokesperson said a contractor would clean the paint from the leisure centre’s walls, and its own workers were trying to clear it from the windows.

“The health and leisure centres were closed to the public on 18th March. However, staff have attended sites most days to carry out building and security checks and also to carry out ongoing maintenance,” the spokesperson said.

“Staff attending the site noticed the graffiti at the rear of the building on Friday 12th June, which was reported, and there was a further incident that evening which was picked up when staff visited site on the Saturday.

“The centres are arranging for the graffiti to be removed and have liaised with the police who have been given access to CCTV.”

Those with information should contact Hampshire police on 101, quoting crime reference number 44200213196, or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
