VANDALS who set a fire in a children's playground have been blasted by the chair of Hythe and Dibden Parish Council.

Cllr Philip Dowd said the incident at Forest Front on Thursday afternoon would have been far worse had it not been for the swift actions of one of the parish's Accredited Community Safety Officers (ACSOs) who was patrolling in the area at the time and spotted smoke.

Cllr Dowd added: "It is so sad to see the damage done by thoughtless individuals to the play equipment at Forest Front just before the half-term break.

"Unfortunately, due to fire damage to some of the equipment and the safety surface the play area remains closed.

"Hythe and Dibden Parish Council will endeavour to reopen this play as soon as possible."

Anyone with information about the incident, which took place at around 2.50pm, is asked to call Hampshire Constabulary on 101 or the parish council's ACSO service on 023 8084 0866.
