THE mayor of Ringwood has lamented the news that the town's post office is set to close.

The Southampton Road outlet is based in the McColl’s store, but the operator has resigned the role and McColl’s is leaving the premises in September, a Post Office spokeswoman confirmed.

Speaking at the latest town council meeting, mayor Cllr Tony Ring revealed his disappointment, adding: “Particularly for the older people in the town, this will be a potential problem."

In an appeal to fellow members, he said: “Anyone who can bring pressure to [stop] their action would be welcome.”

The news was revealed by Cllr Gareth Deboos, who said it would be a “major problem” for many residents. He pointed out there was a Post Office outlet in nearby Poulner.

Cllr Jeremy Heron said he was aware the Post Office had approached other local shops with the offer of moving the outlet elsewhere in town but no agreement had been reached.

A Post Office spokesperson said it wanted to retain a presence in Ringwood and called on anyone interested in hosting it to get in contact.

“We understand how important a post office is to a community and we are committed to providing a post office in the area,” the spokeswoman added.

“We are looking at ways to provide Post Office services.”

Retailers interested in incorporating a Post Office in their premises should email nd.enquiries@postoffice.co.uk or 0333 345 5560, then select option two. The vacancy is advertised on www.runapostoffice.co.uk.
