Southampton Senior Cup Round One

Bashley FC 0

AFC TOTTON moved into the second round of the Southampton Senior Cup with a narrow 1-0 win over Bashley at the Snows Stadium.

Jack Hoey's strike midway through the opening half separated the sides. However, after struggling in the opening exchanges, Bashley – unfazed by playing an opponent from the league above – battled back and made it a nervy finish for the hosts.

In an end-to-end opening 20 minutes, both sides lacked sharpness, but ultimately the home side began to assert a level of dominance.

There was a decent chance in the opening three minutes when Ethan Taylor spotted Sam Thompson off his line and tried an ambitious shot from the halfway line.

The eventual player-of-the-match, Jordan Ragguette, pressed a little too hard for referee Sean Jenkins' liking and conceded a free-kick, although it could have earned a yellow.

Bashley keeper Thompson needed to be at his best, and he did not disappoint with several impressive saves. With 24 minutes played, he stopped a ferocious shot from Ethan Taylor before parrying a 20-yard rocket from the same player four minutes later.

Thompson could do nothing to stop Totton from finally taking the lead five minutes before the break when Hoey hammered home one-on-one after making a driving run from midfield.

With 15 minutes left, Bashley were the side on the attack, and former Stag Ollie Bradley had a decent penalty appeal waved away.

Bradley seemed determined to prove something to his former side, and he played a delightful cross into the Stags area with five minutes remaining, but Lewis Noice reacted quickly, flying through the air to punch the ball away.

Noice was forced into another intelligent save, but Bashley's improved intensity went unrewarded as the hosts managed their lead well and booked their place in the second round.
