Totton man among trio arrested in rogue doorstep trader fraud probe

A TOTTON resident is among three arrested in connection with a spate of rogue trader frauds.

Police detained the trio this week amid enquiries into multiple reports of offences committed in Ringwood, Fareham and Waterlooville between March 2022 and March 2023.

These involved elderly homeowners being coerced into overpaying for unnecessary work on their properties.

Officers arrested the 28-year-old Totton man on suspicion of fraud by false representation and conspiring to commit fraud by false representation.

He has been bailed pending further investigations, along with a 23 year-old man from Blackwater arrested on suspicion of fraud by false representation.

A 35 year-old man from Chandler’s Ford, who was arrested on suspicion of fraud and conspiracy to commit burglary, remains in custody.

In the wake of these arrests, officers released doorstep crime prevention advice, urging people to share with any friends, neighbours and relatives, particularly if they are elderly or have vulnerabilities.

This includes discussing any work needed at the home with a relative or friend who can help find a reputable trader.

Residents should always check unknown callers’ credentials, including a pedlar’s certificate, which anyone selling door to door needs to have.

The force urges people not to agree to any work or sign anything on the spot and not to be pressured into having any work carried out.

They should also never pay cash up front or go to a bank or cashpoint with a trader.

A Hampshire police spokesperson said: “If you suspect a rogue trader is at your door, or if you feel intimidated or they are refusing to leave, call 999.

“Keep an eye on elderly or vulnerable neighbours, friends and family.”
