Lions Club celebrates ‘great success’ of New Milton May Fayre on town’s recreation ground

A SECOND World War display was a highlight of New Milton’s May Fayre on Saturday as thousands flocked to the rec.

The event, organised by the Lions Club of New Milton & District, was blessed with good weather, as the sun shone on the entertainment and activities.

A programme of live music kicked things off with the New Forest Big Band playing all-time classics by favourites like Glenn Miller, Count Basie and Duke Ellington.

There was an ever-popular dog show, as well as a falconry display showing off several birds of prey.

Around 40 community, charity and commercial stalls offered a wide variety of goods for sale.

The RNLI was promoted among them to coincide with the national 200th anniversary commemorations of the volunteer maritime life-saving charity.

In the run-up to 6th June’s 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, the nearby New Milton Memorial Centre hosted an exhibition on the town’s role during the war.

Simon Carter, chair of the Lions Club’s activities committee, said: “The event was a great success and enjoyed by all, particularly the World War Two display and the RNLI 200th anniversary stall.

“The weather was fantastic and the visitors were the best ever.

“We have estimated that approximately 3,000 people attended on Saturday to experience and enjoy the live music, falconry displays, funfair, food and refreshments, Zumba and around 40 stalls.”

He continued: “An event like this takes months of planning, not only by the Lions Club but also New Milton Town Council, New Forest District Council and the associated authorities such as highways and fire.

“Without our sponsors and the generosity of the donations, this event could not take place.”

A total of £220 in donations was collected throughout the day for the Lions Club’s welfare committee to distribute to charities and good causes.

The Lions Club’s next event will be the annual town show on the recreation ground from 11am to 4pm on 25th August. This will include a display of classic cars.
