A MAN has been arrested after a New Milton shopkeeper tried to stop a suspected shoplifter leaving the store.

The incident happened at the McColl's on Avenue Road at around 1.50pm yesterday (Thursday) after the worker noticed a man acting suspiciously in the shop.

He reportedly put a number of items inside his coat and scarf before trying to leave the store without paying, a Hampshire police spokesman said.

An altercation ensued between the man and the shopkeeper, resulting in the staff member being "dragged a short distance by the arms".

The man eventually left the shop, but was found a short while later by local officers and arrested.

A 23-year-old man from Sway was arrested on suspicion of robbery, and remains in custody.
