Neighbourcare New Milton volunteer and founder Phyllis Inglis retires

CELEBRATIONS have been held to mark the retirement of stalwart Neighbourcare New Milton volunteer and founder Phyllis Inglis.

The New Milton-based charity, which coordinates transport to help elderly and vulnerable people travel to medical appointments and hospital visits, was launched by Phyllis and a group of friends in 1994.

Neighbourcare New Milton manager David Whittington said: “Along with some friends Phyllis identified a need to help people get to their medical appointments, as there were few alternatives other than expensive or arduous journeys.

“Under her leadership, Neighbourcare has grown from its humble beginnings to a charity with over 900 local residents using the service, undertaking more than 200 trips a month.”

Currently, Neighbourcare New Milton has a team of around 45 volunteer drivers and 13 coordinators who work in the office. David added: “Phyllis has been a lynch pin of the organisation, as well as contributing hugely to many other local charities.

“She definitely deserves a rest at 96 – but there is no doubt she will be hugely missed. She has done so much for the community of New Milton and we owe a great debt of gratitude to her tireless efforts; and as we all move in the wrong direction, it is a vital service which we may all need at some point of our lives!”

Speaking after her retirement party, Phyllis told the A&T: “My diary is going to look very empty but at 96 I think it is time for me to retire.

“I realised there was a need for Neighbourcare a number of years ago and since then I have used the service myself. It has been a very worthwhile charity to be involved with and I have enjoyed being a part of it.”

Neighbourcare New Milton is always looking to recruit volunteer drivers and co-ordinators. To find out more call 01425 611662 between 9.30am and 12pm, Monday to Friday.
