Joe Nuth completes 72-mile sporting challenge in memory of father Garry’s memory and to raise money for Oakhaven Hospice
A SON has honoured the memory of his late father by completing a 72-mile sporting challenge in a day to raise more than £12,000.
Joe Nuth’s father Garry, who was 72 when he died in July from cancer, was cared for by staff at Oakhaven Hospice. After his death, Joe decided to take on a fundraising challenge which saw him embark on a 50-mile bike ride, a 10-mile row, and 10-mile run.
He finished the day with a two-mile walk alongside family and Garry’s friends.
A charity evening at Hayes Rugby Club helped top up the amount he collected in Garry’s memory.
A father-of-three and grandfather-of-nine, Garry worked for nearly 50 years as a baggage handler at Heathrow Airport.
However, his family frequently visited the New Forest area on family holidays, and in retirement he and his wife Sonia decided to move to New Milton to live in their "dream home”.
Garry’s other son, Adam, said: "The relief Oakhaven gave to my mum was incredible. The knowledge they had was remarkable; I always say they were nurses times 10!
“And so, my brother, Joe, completed this challenge to give thanks to them. I am incredibly proud of Joe.”
Sonia, Joe, and brother Dan visited Oakhaven to hand over a cheque.
Oakhaven’s community and events manager, Jill West, said: “Many, many thanks to Joe and all the Nuth family and friends who have raised this fantastic amount of money.”
