THREE teenagers were arrested after robbers armed with a hammer stole cigarettes and tobacco in a raid on a Totton petrol station.

The alarm was raised in the early hours of yesterday (Sunday) morning, with reports men had targeted the Esso garage off the A336 Ringwood Road.

Enquiries and searches resulted in three people being arrested on suspicion of robbery.

The trio, an 18-year-old local man and two 16-year-old males from Eastleigh and Fareham, were later released under investigation pending further enquiries.

A Hampshire police spokesperson said: “In the early hours of yesterday morning, police received a report that a robbery had taken place at the Esso garage in Ringwood Road.

“It had been reported that males had entered the store armed with a hammer, before stealing cigarettes and tobacco.

“Descriptions were passed of the offenders.

“A short while later four people were stopped in Junction Road by officers.

“As a result of enquiries and subsequent searches, three people were arrested on suspicion of robbery.”

The force spokesperson said the raid may be connected with other burglaries which took place in the town centre the same night.
