Hundreds celebrate New Milton’s Rickman Metisse motorcycle legacy at Sammy Miller’s museum

HUNDREDS of motorcycle enthusiasts converged on Sammy Miller’s New Milton museum at the weekend to celebrate the Rickman Metisse motorcycle legacy.

Set up by motocross racers Derek and Don Rickman in 1959, the town-based Rickman company expanded with a factory in Stem Lane which opened in 1970 where it is estimated they produced around 16,000 bikes.

Their racing machines achieved global success while owners also included film legend Steve McQueen of ‘Great Escape’ and ‘Le Mans’ fame.

Former employees and ex-work racers joined Metisse owners and Don Rickman and his family as multiple champion Sammy hosted the celebration of Don and Derek’s achievements with the day, including a parade and judging in the courtyard.

A mini circuit was set up with Sammy, inventor Allen Millyard and other Rickman owners completing laps.

A raffle and proceeds from the sale of merchandise raised several hundred pounds for Oakhaven Hospice, which cared for Derek in his final days in 2021.

Sammy said: “Thanks to everyone who made it to this fantastic event – perfect weather for a perfect day!

“It was great to see so many standout, incredible Rickman motorcycles and I enjoyed firing up a few of our museum bikes and getting them out on our parade circuit again.

“Thanks to the great Allen Millyard for joining in our day and making it so special and for Don Rickman for greeting everyone and making them welcome.”
